Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia purse money: How much will they make and how will they split it?

Boxing is about business more than it is about matchups and the clash between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia is big business indeed.

The undisputed lightweight king Devin Haney stepped up and ripped the belt from Regis Prograis at Super Lightweight. Now he is facing a fighter who was billed as the next face of the sport prior to being dismantled by Gervonta Davis.

Devin Haney may be the Super Lightweight champion, but in boxing, it is all about how many tickets you sell. And Haney is not the big name in this battle.

Ryan Garcia is the bigger name in this fight, even if he is not the champ. Which is why he was able to reportedly get a favorable split hen it comes to the prize money.

According to Haney’s father, and manager, Bill Haney, it is his son who is fighting for a fair payday, being on the bottom of a 55/45 purse split.

While it is impossible to know final payouts until well after the event, due to the nature of contracts which involve PPV buys, TV rights, and in-person attendance, it is expected that Haney will make something like he did for the Prograis fight, where he is reported to have taken home $6 million.

But now that it is all about box office draw, the sky is the limit. Garcia reportedly took home $30 million for his fight against Gervonta Davis. If he can pull that kind of audience, who knows?

One thing that works against Garcia, and is in Haney’s favor are the last-minute renegotiations due to King Ry missing weight on Friday. Reportedly, Garcia has had to fork over at least $600,000 of his purse to Haney plus a portion of his PPV earnings. This could redress the percentage balance and make it something more like an even split. And then, of course, there is that famous wager that saw Garcia hand over $1.5 million to Haney; half a million for each pound that he was over weight.

In the end, we will have to wait to let the dust settle on this one before we see how much each fighter earns. But one thing is for sure - they are both going to be sitting very pretty indeed.
