Did Gervonta Davis get sentenced to jail?

After pleading guilty earlier this year in a hit-and-run case, Gervonta Davis’ sentencing was delayed until after his fight with Ryan Garcia. Now he has to pay the piper.

Gervonta Davis is being billed as the new face of boxing, even if Canelo Álvarez disagrees with that. Now 29-0, he swept aside Ryan Garcia, who many confidently predicted would expose Tank with a seventh round knockout.

While his work in the ring speaks for iteslf, it is perhaps some of Davis’ private life that could derail him.

Back in November of 2020, Gervonta Davis was involved in a hit-and-run incident that left four people seriously injured. With the Ryan Garcia bout then-upcoming back at the beginning of 2022, Tank decided to try and put it all behind him, pleading guilty to leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, failing to notify an owner of property damage, driving on a suspended license and running a red light.

He accepted a plea deal which would see him received a suspended sentence, avoiding jail time, but this was set aside by a judge who said that no jail was not an option. Reportedly, this was due to one of the victims insisting that Davis face jail time.

Now that the Garcia fight is in the rearview, Davis appeared in a Baltimore court to have his sentence handed down.

What were the charges?

Tank had a lengthy list of charges stemming from the incident and each of them carried a significant amount of potential jail time.

The sentence

Despite what her colleague said from the bench, Judge Althea M Handy presided over the sentencing phase and handed down a sentence of 90 days of home detention followed by three years’ probation.

He still faces charges in Florida on a domestic violence charge, where the plaintiff, the mother of Davis’s daughter, has since filed an affadavit requesting to have the charges dismissed.
