Dustin Johnson made a 35-foot eagle putt on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the LIV Golf Invitational Boston for his first victory in just under two years.

Johnson’s putt on 18 saw him beat Joaquin Niemann and Anirban Lahiri to claim $4 million, bringing his total to just under $10 million in four events.

“It was going a little fast, but it was a good line,” Johnson said. “I got some unlucky breaks [on No. 18] the first time around. It owed me one, and I got it.”

Johnson, who ended the round with a 5-under 65, saw his drive bounce into the rough, before he finished with a par to join Lahiri (64) and Niemann (66) at 15-under.

Both Lahiri and Nieman were making their LIV Golf debuts. Lee Westwood, who finished on the par-4 3rd hole, made bogey to miss the playoff by one. Cam Smith, making his LIV debut, also missed the playoff by a single stroke after shooting 63 on Sunday.

Johnson had not won a tournament since the Saudi International on 7 February 2021, when it was part of the European tour schedule.

“I’ve had a chance to win every one,” he said. “That’s three in a row for the team, and for me to get my first, I’m feeling good.”

Prize money

Lahiri and Niemann each made just over $1.8 million for losing in the playoff. They were among six players who signed with LIV Golf after the PGA Tour season ended.

What’s next for LIV Golf

The next LIV Golf Invitational series will take place in the Chicago suburbs at Rich Harvest Farms in two weeks.

The inaugural LIV Golf season is now officially halfway over as the new tour starts to look toward its season-ending championship in Miami at the end of October.

Between now and the $50 million team finale in Miami, LIV will travel to Chicago (Sept. 16-18), Bangkok (Oct. 7-9) and Jeddah (Oct. 14-16).
