The Edmonton Oilers are heading towards a historic streak in the NHL. They are on the verge of becoming only the second team to go 0-3 in the Stanley Cup Finals. In a thrilling sixth game, they secured a resounding 5-1 victory over the Florida Panthers.

The other historic Canadian team they are chasing

Since 1945, no team that started 0-3 has made it to the tiebreaker. The only team in history to achieve this feat was the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942. After losing the first three games to the Detroit Red Wings, the Maple Leafs won the next four to win the series 4–3. This victory gave them their fourth Stanley Cup and made them the first team in North American sports history to overcome a 3–0 series deficit to win a playoff series.

This was the first Stanley Cup Final in history to go seven games and the only one to result in a reverse sweep.

The crucial seventh game of this year’s Stanly Cup Final is scheduled to take place in Florida on Monday, and we’ll have the chance to witness if the Oilers can repeat the 1942 Maple Leaf’s feat.

McDavid’s first time without a stat point in a win

Despite the Panthers successfully neutralizing Connor McDavid, the Oilers were scored upon from each of their four lines, with Warren Foegele, Adam Henrique, Zach Hyman, and Ryan McLeod scoring, and defeated the Florida Panthers 5-1 in Game 6 at Rogers Place.

We have an unwavering belief in ourselves. Regardless of the challenges we faced during the season, we always believed we could overcome them,” expressed Hyman after the game.

Notably, this playoff win marked the first time since McDavid joined the team nine years ago that the Oilers secured a victory without him recording a goal or an assist.

The Panthers mourned Barkov’s disallowed goal in the second period, which they would have reduced to 2:1, and maybe, as it was a key moment of the game, it could have changed the momentum where it went. The goal was disallowed for offside.

That would push us,” Panthers coach Paul Morris said, jokingly adding, “We’ll get still frames. We’ll bring in the CIA. We’ll figure it out.” Be that as it may, the Panthers still have a chance to win the first trophy in history in front of their fans in Sunrise, Florida, on Monday at 8 p.m. ET
