F1 results: Singapore GP and World Championship standings

Charles Leclerc finally inched closer to Max Verstappen in the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship after a second-place finish in the Singapore Grand Prix.

Update:
Charles Leclerc finally inched closer to Max Verstappen in the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship after a second-place finish in the Singapore Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc was not able to find a way to get past Sergio Pérez, and the Mexican went on to win the Formula 1 Singapore GP. However, Leclerc managed a second place finish and finally inched closer to dominant leader Max Verstappen, who finished seventh. The Ferrari driver’s teammate, Carlos Sainz, finished third to close out the podium.

The McLaren drivers also had a good showing, with Lando Norris finishing in fourth place and Daniel Ricciardo in fifth, for a double-points haul for the team. Alpine did not have the same luck, with both pilots Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso failing to finish due to problems with their cars’ power units.

Perez creeps up on Leclerc

Perez’s win brings him to only two points behind Leclerc, while a single point now separates Sainz and George Russell.

Verstappen had the opportunity to secure his second consecutive world title in the Singapore Grand Prix, but a dismal performance in qualifying and an unimpressive race put the championship out of his reach, at least for the weekend. He continues to have an overwhelming 104-point lead over Leclerc, and will have another chance to clinch the trophy in the 18th round of the competition.

The next stop for Formula 1 is Japan, to be held next weekend over 53 laps of the 3,608-mile Suzuka International Racing Course.
