Federer’s take on Djokovic being considered the GOAT

The Swiss, who retired last year, shared his opinion on who’s the greatest tennis player of all time, and he doesn’t rule out Nadal.

Novak Djokovic recently become the French Open champion and overtook Rafa Nadal as the player with the most majors in men’s singles history with 23 titles.

With that win, many started considering the Serb the greatest male tennis player ever, a debate that has always existed but that has had the same three names over the last decade: Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, and Roger Federer.

The truth is that the ‘Big Three’ have dominated the sport like anyone has so far and even if Nole possesses now the highest number of Grand Slam tournaments won, there may be other aspects to be taken into consideration to declare a player the GOAT.

Djokovic said after the Roland Garros final, where he defeated Casper Ruud, that he didn’t want to consider himself the greatest of all time, as it’s something that is up for people to decide.

Federer on Djokovic’s GOAT status

The Basel native shared his thoughts when asked about the GOAT debate. The 41-year-old said that it could be too early to consider Nole as the greatest, as Nadal hasn’t retired yet.

“What Djokovic has achieved is absolutely gigantic. It could be sufficient. But I think as long as Rafa is still playing, too, you can’t answer that definitively yet”, he said.

Although Nadal recently announced that he would retire in 2024 after having lots of injury issues over the last few years, especially this one, Federer knows the Manacor-bred great very well and doesn’t rule out another comeback from the Spaniard.

Nadal, who was expected to have an exciting battle with Djokovic this year to see who would end up getting more success in the Grand Slam competitions, last competed in the Australian Open.
