From rooftop parties to costume cheers: How New York City Marathon fans go all out to watch the race
Two million spectators are set to pack the streets as New Yorkers celebrate the marathon with music, posters, and plenty of spirit.

The 2025 New York Marathon takes place on Sunday, November 2, and it promises to be a momentous occasion not only for the 55,000 runners from all over the world who are taking part.
An estimated two million people are expected to line the streets of the Big Apple to watch the action. Many “super fans” say it is one of the highlights of the year, whether they are runners or not.
A day that brings New Yorkers together
For many locals, the marathon draws people out into the streets and brings the city together in a way no other event can. “There’s something so wonderful and community-based about marathon day,” said Lauren Rutkowski, a 34-year-old from Brooklyn, to the New York Post. “Everyone is happy for everyone else, and you see all of the best parts of New York.”
Turning marathon day into a party
Rachel Naurath, 33, is one New Yorker who uses the marathon as an excuse to get together with friends, both old and new. She hosts a watch party near her home, where attendees are expected to cheer runners on, make posters, eat bagels, and perhaps even dress up.
“It’s my job as a spectator to be happy and engaged (and possibly a little drunk),” Naurath told the New York Post.
Finding the perfect viewing spot
Naurath believes she has found the ideal vantage point close to home, though the definition of the perfect spot is subjective. Some spectators prefer to avoid the biggest crowds, while others want to be right in the middle of the excitement.
The stretch between Queensboro Bridge and First Avenue is often cited as one of the liveliest parts of the course, while others opt for rooftop parties that offer spectacular views, even if they are a little removed from the action.
For many marathon “super fans,” researching or stumbling upon the best viewing spot is part of the fun, as is figuring out how to navigate road closures in the most efficient way possible.

The power of the crowd
While spectators enjoy the spectacle, their presence has a real impact on the athletes. Research shows that being cheered on can help runners perform better by boosting confidence, increasing motivation, and reducing the perception of pain and stress.
The positive energy from the crowd can trigger an adrenaline rush, lift spirits, and reinforce belief in their abilities.
A boost for local businesses
And it’s not just the runners who benefit. For local businesses, especially bars, cafes, restaurants, and shops along the route, there’s no more profitable day than New York Marathon day.
