Fury vs Usyk: ‘The perfect time for a unification’

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said heavyweight champions Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk should fight after Fury’s clear win over Derek Chisora.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said heavyweight champions Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk should fight after Fury’s clear win over Derek Chisora.

Are we a step closer to a Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk mega-fight? It certainly seems so.

World Boxing Council (WBC) president Mauricio Sulaiman said to Sky Sports that he would like to see a heavyweight title clash between WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and IBF, WBA, and WBO heavyweight titleholder Oleksandr Usyk in the near future.

“This is the perfect time to do a unification,” Sulaiman said, adding that they “ordered a final elimination between (Deontay) Wilder and Andy Ruiz”.

The Gypsy King proved his third bout vs. Chisora was more of a ‘tune-up’ fight than a real challenge after dispatching his compatriot by a 10th-round technical knockout.

“The importance of this fight (a Fury-Usyk match) is far beyond any organization, so we’re supporting it and we’ll do everything possible to make sure it takes place,” Sulaiman added.

Fury’s Plan B: Joe Joyce

Fury (33-0-1, 24 KOs) and Usyk stood face-to-face after the fight to promote their potential clash in a meeting that WBO interim heavyweight champ Joe Joyce joined too.

In case the two-time heavyweight champion can’t get the Usyk fight, he will try to reach an agreement with Joyce in another all-British encounter.

“I said, let’s get it on. The Rabbit [Oleksandr Usyk] is next. if the rabbit can’t be made in Saudi or wherever then we’ll do Joe Joyce in Wembley next year”, Fury stated.

“If it’s not Usyk, give me the biggest, toughest son of a gun out there, and I believe that’s Joe Joyce”, he added.

Fury was ready to fight Joshua when AJ was still champion, but the situation changed when an American judge ruled that Fury would have to face Deontay Wilder instead. In the meantime, Joshua lost his belts to Usyk.
