Greg Biffle and family confirmed dead: what we know about the former NASCAR driver’s tragic accident

The world on NASCAR got terrible news on Thursday when it was reported that a Cessno C550 belonging to Greg Biffle had crashed at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina and later confirmed that he and his family, wife Cristina Grossu, their 5-year-old son Ryder, and his 14-year-old daughter Emma, were among the six people on board.

Currently, the reason behind the crash is unknown, and the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are investigating. However, according to eyewitnesses the plane was flying extremely low when it approached the airport, reports the Associated Press.

Weather not ruled out as a factor in the crash

The plane took off from the airport a little after 10 am local time but for some reason had to return. The aircraft crashed around 10:45 am as it was attempting to land.

Conditions at the airport were foggy with visibility limited to roughly 5 miles, according to local new station WSOC, whose own chopper had to return because of the weather conditions. The outlet says “it is not confirmed if this contributed to the accident.”
