The Ryder Cup is underway again and what a few days we have in store. The United States are defending their title but have not won a competition in Europe since Tom Watson captained the US to victory at the Belfry in England in 1993.

Ryder Cup hole-in-ones

There have been six hole-in-ones in Ryder Cup history: Peter Butler in 1973, Nick Faldo in 1993, Costantino Rocca and Howard Clark in 1995, and Paul Casey and Scott Verplank in 2006 at the K Club in Ireland.

Rahm comes close

Earlier on Friday, Europe’s Jon Rahm almost made it seven hole-in-ones but his effort hit the flag and bounced back out.

Hovland hits hole-in-one during practice round

Viktor Hovland had a hole-in-one at Marco Simone ahead of the start of this year’s Ryder Cup. The 26-year-old from Norway hit the shot during the practice round - one day before the official competition started.

Hovland’s success came on the 302-yard par four with a three-wood. As he turned away after driving, there was a roar from those gathered around the hole, before he was mobbed by his teammates as the ball found the hole.

When does the Ryder Cup end?

The Ryder Cup at Marco Simone ends on Sunday 1 October.
