Update:

Former unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua did what he was expected to do, defeating YouTube star-turned-boxer Jake Paul by knockout in Miami on Friday. The bout earned both fighters approximately $93 million in prize money, according to reports. However, that figure is far from what the Englishman will actually take home.

Taxes bite into AJ’s payday

Florida’s lack of state income tax was a rare financial bright spot for the fighters. Unfortunately, the good news ended there, particularly for Paul, who suffered a broken jaw in two places.

Under U.S. federal law, both Joshua and Paul were subject to the top federal income tax rate of 37 percent, which amounts to roughly $34.4 million taken from each of their earnings.

UK tax adds up for Joshua

Joshua, based in London, must also comply with U.K. tax law. That means paying more than $7 million to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, plus $2 million in National Insurance contributions.

In total, AJ will walk away with about $49.6 million from Friday’s fight. While few will shed tears for him, that is just over half of his initial payout.

How much did Jake Paul make from Joshua fight?

Since Paul isn’t subject to U.K. taxes, the 28-year-old pocketed around $58.6 million, nearly $10 million more than Joshua despite losing the fight.

A disappointing spectacle

The fight has been widely criticized in both boxing and entertainment circles. Former Olympic champion Joshua faced scrutiny for needing six rounds to defeat Paul, who also drew criticism for spending much of the bout running from or clinging to his opponent before eventually succumbing to Joshua’s decisive, jaw-breaking punch.
