How do players qualify for the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst? Requirements and qualifying sites
Though there are still a few months to go before the tournament tees off, qualifying for the 2024 US Open will begin in a few days. Here’s how it all works.
The 2024 U.S. Open will be played at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s Course No. 2, in the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina from June 13th-16th. It will mark the fourth time that the tournament is being played at the prestigious course, and it promises to be quite a show. Yet, as we prepare to watch the qualification process, one has to wonder where are the qualifying sites, and how does it all work? Let’s take a look.
The U.S Open qualifying process
Before we begin, it’s important to note that there are two phases to the qualifying process: ‘Local qualifying’ and ‘Final qualifying’. Now, when it comes to local qualifying, it will be staged over 18 holes at 109 sites across 44 states in the United States and Canada. Qualifiers will be played from April 22nd - May 20th. Online registration for qualifying will begin on Wednesday, February 21st - champs.usga.org - and end on Wednesday, April 10th. In order to be eligible, a player must have a Handicap Index that does not exceed 0.4, or be a professional. If you’re wondering, California is the state that will host the most qualifying sites with 14, while Florida comes just behind with 13.

“Allied Golf Associations in the United States and National Federations and Tours in Europe, Canada and Japan collaborate to provide an avenue to the U.S. Open through both qualifying stages where the world’s greatest players will compete for our national championship,” said USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer. “Thousands of professional and amateur golfers with diverse backgrounds will have an opportunity to earn a place in this year’s championship at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.”
What about ‘Final qualifying?’
For those who are good enough to make it out of the local qualifying round, will then be granted the opportunity to join a group of locally exempt players in final qualifying which will be played across 36 holes. That’s also where things go international as the process will be staged not only in the U.S. (May 20th & June 3rd) but in England and Japan (May 20th) and Canada (June 3rd) as well.
