The Open Championship was over before it started for Tiger Woods, who missed the cut with a 36-hole score of +14 finishing way down the leaderboard on Day 2.

The 48-year-old has now missed the cut in each of his last three appearances at the Open Championship and suffered a similar fate at Pinehurst No.2 last month, missing out on the US Open for the second time in four years.

The last few years have been tough for Tiger and 2024 is no exception. He had to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational in February, finished last at the Masters Tournament and missed the cut at the PGA Championship in May.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour record set over seven years

Between 1998 and 2005, Woods made the cut in 142 consecutive events over seven years to set a new PGA Tour record. His run came to an end in 2005 when he missed a 15-foot par putt, leaving him out of the Byron Nelson. It had all started back in 1998 at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am - an event which Woods. along with a number of others, withdrew from after two rounds.

Woods’ last major victory was at the 2019 Masters, where he won his fifth Green Jacket, and 15th major. His career almost ended when he suffered a near-fatal car accident in February 2021 which left him with multiple fractures to the upper and lower fibula and tibia in his right leg.

He has been trying to get his career back on track ever since. After failing to make the grade at last month’s US Open and now Royal Troon, it leaves a question mark over whether he is up to the task of playing at this level. Tiger has missed 17 cuts at major tournaments since 1995, most of them coming over the last 10 years.

When we will see Woods again is anyone’s guess. After his US Open disappointment, he himself was unclear about what the future holds, saying, “I thought I played well enough to be up there in contention. It just didn’t work out. I’ll be in the [FedEx Cup] Playoffs. Just one more event and then I’ll come back whenever I come back. As far as my last Open Championship or US Open Championship, I don’t know what that is. It may or may not be”.
