It was a much-anticipated all-British heavyweight bout, with Tyson Fury going up against Dillian Whyte to defend his WBC and Ring Magazine titles before a sold-out crowd at Wembley Stadium

Fury’s preparation for the fight was evident in his much-slimmer physique. Although he was less in bulk, his power was not diminished in any way, as evidenced by his spectacular uppercut knockout.

Fury-Whyte’s 80-20 split

All that training has paid off- quite literally- as the undefeated Gypsy King will receive the $4.1 million bonus that was set aside for the fight’s winner.

This incentive was just the cherry on top for Fury. The basic amount for each fighter for simply entering the ring was an 80-20 split, a rate that Whyte expressed displeasure with. The basic fight purse totaled $36.9 million, $29.5 million of which was earmarked for Fury, and the remaining $7.4 million for Whyte.

Whyte, nicknamed the Body Snatcher, contested the division, and there were even reports that he would file a case to settle the matter.

He however eventually accepted that he could not pursue a higher percentage of the purse.

Tyson Fury: ‘It’s never been about money’

Fury has said that money has not been his motive for fighting, and is said to live a modest life. He has also been known to use his money for charity.

The 33-year-old donated the entire purse of his first fight with Deontay Wilder in 2018 towards building homes for alcohol and drug addicts in the UK. The cause is close to his heart, as Fury has admitted to having his own battles with addiction.

The heavyweight champion has hinted that the bout with Whyte could be his last. If he does push through with his retirement, he will comfortably be able to do so. His latest victory lined his pockets with a total of $33.6 million, adding to an already considerable career-winnings total.
