It’s hard to believe he’s only been on tour for two years because his name has been at the top of the leaderboard on many occasions at important events. In 2022 he suffered a playoff loss to Justin Thomas at the PGA Championship and was runner-up at the U.S. Open after dueling it out with winner Matt Fitzpatrick.

He couldn’t hold back the emotion after winning on the third playoff hole, the par-3 11th hole, with a bogey that was enough to beat his rival, the Austrian Sepp Straka. Although Zalatoris’ ball didn’t find the water, he had to take a drop because of the impossible lie he had against the rocks that separated his ball from the hazard. His up-and-down on the last playoff hole was enough to give him his first victory on the PGA Tour.

After a first round 71 things weren’t looking too good for Zalatoris and his fiancé asked him, “What are your plans if you don’t make the weekend?” The question might have flustered someone else, but it seemed to motivate him on Friday when he shot a seven-under 63.

With this win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship Zalatoris not only takes home a nice paycheck, he is also nicely positioned in first place in the FedExCup playoffs, which will continue on Thursday at the Wilmington Country Club in Delaware at the BMW Championship.
