How much does it cost to play at Kapalua’s Plantation Course on Maui?
The ‘Tournament of Champions’ gets underway this week with the likes of Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas expected to challenge in Kapalua, Hawaii.
The Sentry, formerly known as the ‘Tournament of Champions’, kick-starts the 2025 PGA Tour in Kapalua, Hawaii on Thursday. The competition first served as the starting point of the PGA season in 1986 and always brings many of the world’s best golfers to an idyllic resort location.
The Kapalua Resort, owned by the Maui Land & Pineapple Company, is an island retreat covering 22,000 acres of land. Nestled between the mountain ridges of Puʻu Kukui and lava rock bays, it’s one of the most picturesque spots on the tour.
This 2025 The Sentry field is led by Xander Schauffele, with the likes of Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg and Patrick Cantlay also in contention for the first prize of the 2025 calendar.
There are, however, a number of big-name absentees too. Rory McIlroy will skip the first tournament of the year, as do his Ryder Cup teammates Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry. Despite having planned to take part, World No 1 Scottie Scheffler was forced to pull out due to injury.
Any keen amateurs looking to test themselves against the challenging 7,596-yard course can do so, with no membership required. A single round at The Sentry’s Plantation Course costs $469. Kapalua Resort guests get the modestly-reduced price of $439. On top of that, there is also the rider fee ($65), club rentals ($85) and golf shoe rentals ($19) to factor in to the cost.
What is the Kapalua Plantation Course record score?
Kapalua Resort is a golfer’s paradise, with two championship golf courses recognized as some of the best in the world. The Bay Course and the Plantation Course are used on both the PGA and LPGA circuits.
The Kapalua Bay Course was inaugurated in 1975 and has hosted more than 20 major professional tournaments over the years. The Plantation Course was designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, two of the world’s most respected golf course architects, and offers sweeping ocean views from almost every hole. The course has been designed to take advantage of the natural terrain, with dramatic elevation changes and various hazards that add to the challenge.
The Sentry tournament field is typically comprised of the previous year’s PGA TOUR winners, including some of the greatest golfers ever. Over the years, the field has included golf legends such as Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, and Davis Love III.
The Plantation Course record is 61, jointly held by Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, and Matt Jones.
There have been significant changes made over the years, particularly ahead of the 2020 event. Organisers oversaw a huge effort to re-turf the course, rebuild all the greens and bunkers, and add tee boxes and enlarged putting surfaces. It remains a firm favourite of the tour professionals and is well deserving of its No. 33 spot on GOLF’s list of Top 100 Courses You Can Play.
