A new name will be engraved on the Australian Open 2024 men’s trophy this weekend as Italian fourth seed Jannik Sinner takes on Daniil Medvedev in the 56th edition of the Open era. Medvedev, who bounced back after going two sets down to Alexander Zverev in Friday’s semi-final, has come this far before - he finished as runner-up 2021 and 2022. Sinner meanwhile, has won ten ATP Tour titles but this will be his first crack at winning a major event.

Before that, Aryna Sabalenka will be defending her crown on Rod Laver court against Zheng Qinwen who, in turn, will be aiming to emulate Li Na’s achievement in this tournament a decade ago when she beat Dominika Cibulkova 7–6(7–3) 6–0 to become the first and only Chinese player to win the trophy.

Organizers will be pleased with this year’s attendance figures. Overall, crowd figures are slightly up on last year - Day 7 drew the biggest crowd with 93,723 spectators filing though Melbourne Park - the second largest attendance figures on record. The Rod Laver Arena, which can house a capacity crowd of 14,820, is expected to be full to the rafters for both Saturday’s women’s final and the men’s final on Sunday.
