Definitely not a household name, Brian Harman has managed to win the 151st British Open. It’s his first major and only his third win as a professional. Over ten years on the PGA and he has finally broken through and dominated the field from Thursday to Sunday.

The course at Royal Liverpool got the best of some of the top golfers who suffered to find fairways and avoid pot bunkers. Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau, amongst others, didn’t make the cut. The course was different on the weekend due to the rain, but that didn’t keep Jon Rahm from making a charge on Saturday.

Harman started Sunday with a 5-shot lead and had Cam Young, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy breathing down his neck, but they just couldn’t come close. The left-hander from Georgia wasn’t spectacular or exciting, but he got it done on his own terms. A lot has been said about Harman’s hobby as a hunter and although he’s not a physical presence on the course, he definitely had excellent aim these four days.

How much did Brian Harman win at the Open?

The purse at the 2023 British Open was $16.5 million. The prize money was spread out through the field with record-setting money going to all of those who made the cut. Harman took home his biggest paycheck ever: $3 million, but that’s not all he gets. The winner of the British Open gets to take home the Claret Jug, the trophy that Cameron Smith had to hand over to the new winner. He will also be exempt to play at the Open until he’s 60 years old. He has gained a five-year PGA Tour exemption, a 5-year exemption the Masters, the PGA Championship and the US Open.

He will also get 600 FedExCup points and 100 OWGR points. Not a bad week for the deer hunter from Georgia.
