This year’s Charles Schwab Challenge produced an unlikely winner. Odds on Davis Riley being crowned champion in Fort Worth were listed at +30000 but the the 27-year-old held his nerve on Sunday, shooting an even-par 70 to maintain his place at the top of the leaderboard and secure his second PGA Tour victory and his first individual title.

Davis Riley beats Scheffler to lift the Charles Schwab Challenge

Davis finished five strokes ahead of the big favorite and world No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Keegan Bradley, tied in second at nine under.

I’m just proud of the way that my team put all their energy and effort into me and I felt I could put some good work in, I’m just super grateful for the people around me to push me through that hard time,” an elated Davis said afterwards. “It was definitely a learning curve Monday, Tuesday Wednesday. A lot of changes on and around the green. The green complex has changed quite a bit - shipping around... it was just a little different. So getting your sightlines, finding pout where the center of the green was certainly a learning curve early”.

The Colonial National Invitation, currently known as the Charles Schwab for sponsorship reasons, is one of the five invitational events on the PGA Tour. The first edition was held in 1946 and it remains an ever-present on the PGA Tour.

This year’s competition has a total purse of $9,100,000, with the winning golfer taking home $1,638,000 as top prize. Here’s a look at the prize money break-down for the top ten finishers at the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge...

The competition’s ‘invitational’ status means that it has a reduced field of around 120 players, while most full-field tournaments contain either 144 or 156 players. The other four invitational tournaments on the PGA Tour are the Genesis Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage, and the Memorial Tournament.

Where was rank outsider Davis Riley in the betting odds to win the Charles Schwab Challenge?

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was tipped as the outright favourite to bag the top prize in Fort Worth. He has won four of his five previous starts, including the 2024 Masters, but he has never previously won the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Scheffler is ranked as the world’s best but he made headlines for all the wrong reasons last week, arrested on charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. He started out at the favorite to win in Forth Worth at +260.

Among the others that Davis beat to the top prize were Collin Morikawa (+1200), Jordan Spieth and Max Homa - both at +2000. Of that trio, Morikawa is ranked the highest on the PGA Tour and he nearly triumphed at this competition in 2020, losing to Daniel Berger on a playoff.
