How much prize money did Stephan Jaeger win at the Texas Children’s Houston Open?
The German winner was humble in his play, preferring instead to pay tribute to the play of World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, but what about the purse he won?
With an increased purse size in this year’s Texas Children’s Houston Open, competition was always going to be fierce, but few could have predicted the toe-for-toe battle that we witnessed between Golf’s best player and the eventual winner: Stephan Jaeger.
Stephan Jager wins the 2024 Texas Children’s Houston Open
Despite his fantastic performance across three rounds of play at the 2024 Texas Children’s Houston Open, it’s interesting to note that eventual winner, Stephan Jaeger, spent more time talking about World No. 1, Scottie Scheffler than he did about his own performance. Indeed, following second-round play on Friday, the 34-year-old German was already enamored by Scheffler’s play.
“Honestly, it’s fun to watch, right,” Jaeger said of Scheffler’s play. “It’s unorthodox in a sense and it’s - ball-striking-wise it’s really, really, really impressive what he’s doing week in, week out. To be that on, and your bad stuff be that good, is pretty impressive. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy, he’s awesome, so I’m happy for him obviously. ...I’m going to try to beat his brains out this weekend”, and that he did, metaphorically at least and in a manner that was deserving of the applause he received.
In the end, Jaeger held of Scheffler’s challenge while carding nine straight pars on the back nine at Memorial Park Golf Club to capture his first PGA Tour title in what was his 135th start. Jaeger shot 12-under 268, finishing a single shot ahead of Scheffler and defending champion Tony Finau, amongst others. As for what he pocketed with the win, that would be an increase on what Finau took home last year. In total, the purse in this year’s competition was bumped up from $8.4 million to $9.1 million which saw Jaeger earn $1.63 million as opposed to the $1.5 million awarded to Finau last year.
