They say competition is good and those competing at the 2022 US Open at Brookline would definitely agree. USGA’s Mike Whan announced the day before play began on Thursday that the purse would be $5 million more than last year, totalling $17.5 million.

In 2021 at the US Open at Torrey Pines the total purse was $12.5 million and the winner, Jon Rahm, took home $2.25 million.

Matt Fitzpatrick pocketed $3.15 million for winning at Brookline this weekend, a large payout, but less than Cameron Smith’s $3.6 million check for winning The Players Championship. This year for his win at the Masters, Scottie Scheffler earned $2.7 million, the same amount as Justin Thomas for his PGA Championship victory.

The competition comes into play, not only between major tournaments, but also with the LIV Invitational Golf Series. The new tournament paid Charl Schwartzel $4.75 million for his win at the inaugural tournament in London. Of that amount $750,000 was for his team’s win, but $4 million is still the largest individual prize for one single tournament in professional golf history.
