As Round 2 of the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship is underway and golfers are swinging, it’s important to be reminded of the prize purse that awaits the winner on Sunday’s final day of competition.

The Quail Hollow organization provided a prize money offering this year increased by an impressive 122%. Just to give you a clear picture of his, last year’s winner, Max Homa, cashed in $1,620,000, while this year’s Wells Fargo champion will take $3,600,000.

The reason behind such a drastic increase in prize money is that the tournament is part of the ‘elevated events’ introduced by the PGA this season. In response to competitor LIV Golf’s threat to poach young golfers and divide the sport, the PGA TOUR has implemented significant changes in 2023. In this new era, TOUR is offering incentives to players and fans, including introducing “elevated events” as one of the substantial changes.

GOLF:

‘Elevated events’ is the PGA TOUR aiming to enhance their existing system by offering higher payouts to top golfers participating in a series of 17 prestigious events. With the best of the best competing in the same field, they hope to attract more fans and viewers.

2023 Wells Fargo Championship prize money

The Wells Fargo Championship was always considered a highly competitive event, often attracting top players looking to fine-tune their skills before the PGA Championship.

This year, the tournament has been elevated and boasts a purse valued at $20 million - more than double the amount offered in 2022. Considering the standard PGA Tour payout of 18%, the tournament winner will take home a staggering $3.6 million. So the competitive level raised a notch even more.
