Founded by golfing icon Jack Nicklaus in 1976, the the PGA Tour event has become one of the most illustrious fixtures on the tour. It holds the status of ‘invitational’, meaning that the field is limited to just 120 golfers.

The Memorial Tournament typically brings together many of the world’s top players, offering real sporting prestige, FedExCup points and a huge prize fund. This year’s tournament boasts a total prize purse of $20 million. The winner will bag a $4 million top prize.

Which PGA Tour golf tournament has the biggest prize fund?

For 2024 the Memorial Tournament ranks among the most lucrative of the competitions on the PGA Tour, second only to the Players Championship in terms of total purse.

Golfers at the Players Championship are competing for a share of a $25 million total prize fund. The winner bags a $4.5 million top prize, also the largest on the tour.

There are a number of PGA Tour tournaments that offer a total purse of $20 million, including The Masters, The Sentry and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AM. However only The Memorial and the Arnold Palmer Invitational offer a $4 million top prize for the winner.

Aside from the money on offer the Memorial Tournament also offers crucial ranking points for golfers as we approach the US Open. The top 60 in the World Golf Rankings will qualify automatically for the year’s third major and the likes of Ben Griffin (70th), Lee Hodges (75th) and Davis Riley (78th) could still sneak in with a big performance in Ohio this week.
