Ilia ignites Topuria-mania
UFC star Topuria was greeted by huge crowds of fans on his return to Georgia.

Ilia Topuria isn’t just a UFC champion - he’s a global phenomenon. Known as “El Matador,” the Spanish-Georgian fighter recently returned to his roots in Georgia, where he was met with an overwhelming outpouring of love and admiration. The reception was so intense that Topuria could barely step out of his car, requiring an escort through the throngs of fans who had gathered to greet him.
The reigning UFC lightweight champion and pound-for-pound No. 1 took a moment to connect with his homeland, sharing his itinerary on social media and inviting fans to meet him at the iconic Chronicles of Georgia monument in Tbilisi. What followed was nothing short of cinematic. As Topuria’s vehicle approached, thousands surged forward, creating a scene he later compared to a Superman movie - packed shoulder to shoulder, not a single space left.
Despite the chaos, Topuria made time for everyone he could. He posed for photos, signed autographs, and greeted fans with warmth and humility. The images and videos circulating online show him surrounded by a sea of supporters, a testament to his status not just as a fighter, but as a national hero. Few athletes in the sport’s history have achieved dual championships in the UFC, and Topuria’s rise has clearly struck a chord with fans across continents.

UFC 234: Topuria vs Pimblett heating up
While Topuria was being celebrated in Georgia, speculation around his next fight continued to build. All signs point to him headlining UFC 234 in January 2026, potentially against long-time rival Paddy Pimblett.
UFC President Dana White recently confirmed that Topuria is “a possibility” for the main event, which will also mark the debut of the UFC’s new broadcast partnership with Paramount, a landmark €7.7 billion deal over seven years.
Pimblett and Justin Gaethje appear to be the two contenders to fight Topuria - and Ilia has made his preference clear. “Definitely Paddy,” he said during a public appearance in Georgia. “We’ve got history. That’s the fight everyone wants to see. And I think people want me to do something I can’t say out loud here.” Still, he added, “I’d fight anyone.”
