Is Cam Smith joining LIV Golf? The Open winner responds to rumors
Fresh off his victory at the 150th edition of the Open Championship, Cameron Smith responded to rumors about him joining LIV Golf.
Anticipation reached a fever pitch at the 150th Open Championships last weekend as Rory McIlroy entered as the favorite in the field and Cameron Smith left as the winner.
The oldest course in the world at St. Andrews witnessed an array of emotions including Tiger Woods’ teary-eyed farewell in what may have been his last professional golf championship, Rory Mcllory putting on a show that had him in first place, Phil Mickelson’s unfelt presence and the tense rejection of him and other golfers who have defected to the Saudi-funded LIV series.
But following the rollercoaster of events, attention surrounds Cam Smith, for reasons other than his thrilling victory in Scotland.
Cam Smith might join LIV Golf
The 28-year-old Australian was celebrated at St. Andrews for his outstanding performance as he won his first major tournament with a final round 64 overhauling Mcllroy’s lead. But moments after his victory, Smith was approached with a question that might have been asked a little too soon: whether Smith was interested in joining LIV Golf.
“I just won the British Open and you’re asking about that? I think that’s pretty- not that good,” responded Smith.
He continued to say, “I don’t know, mate. My team around me worries about all that stuff, I’m here to win golf tournaments.”

Will Cameron Smith join LIV Golf?
Smith’s response may have been an attempt to shrug off the political question, but he sure didn’t put an end to the rumors that link him to the Saudi-backed league. If some reports are accurate, Smith is almost certainly being offered to join LIV for $90 million just for deciding to play for the new league, after which he would make $4 million for every tournament win.
The Aussie took home $2.5 million, following The Open victory, taking his earnings to nearly $10 million in 2021-22.
He earned the Claret Jug, which is awarded to the best players in golf, and after his performance on the back nine at the home of golf on Sunday he has proved to be the world’s best, joining the list of Australians who have won The Open, Peter Thomson, Kel Nagle, Greg Norman and Ian Baker-Finch.
“Every player that’s been at the top of their game has won this championship. It’s pretty cool to be there,” Smith said.
