Jake Paul - Mike Tyson press conference live online updates

Jake Paul - Mike Tyson pre-fight press conference as it happened

Tyson and Paul didn't do a great deal other than praise each other and Netflix, although we did get this little gem from Iron Mike, which might've been the highlight of the event (some would argue that doesn't say much for the rest of it).

Paul - Tyson and Taylor - Serrano the co-main events in Arlington

Jake Paul against Mike Tyson and Katie Taylor against Amanda Serrano will be the co-main events at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with more matches to be added to the card in the next little while.

Thanks for tuning in!

Paul and Tyson go face to face on 20 July

Well, what did we learn from all that? Not a great deal, I'd suggest. Both Paul and Tyson bigged the fight up to the hilt and were maybe a bit too nice to each other. The post-press conference face up might lead to some doubts about how seriously they'll take it...

Host Ariel Helwani mentioned Netflix about 1000 times, as well as how many subscribers could be watching (remember you can watch it there at no extra cost if you have a subscription...).

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano got into it more as the press conference went on, with their polite answers giving way to a bit of bravado towards the end.

The good news is we'll get to see them do it all again on Thursday (yes, in three days, on 16 May).

Over and out!

as.com

Host Ariel Helwani reminds us that there will be a second press conference in Arlington, Texas on Thursday, while more fights will be added to the card in the coming days and weeks.

as.com

They do eventually manage a couple of seconds doing a "proper" face off.

as.com

Tyson playfully digs Paul in the ribs and laughs. These two are finding it hard to take things seriously, it seems.

as.com

Serrano stands slightly taller than Taylor, who has a slight smirk on her face. The Puerto Rican is deadly serious.

as.com

Things look to be wrapping up. But our opponents will face up before they go.

Paul also asked to give youngsters advice

"Don't give up, your opportunity will come," says Paul. The high schoolers are rooting for Jake, one teenager fan claims.

Well, they were asking for that!

Fan questions incoming...this could be fun.

Taylor dismisses Serrano trilogy

Taylor and Serrano being very polite so far...until now! The ladies are asked whether they would be up for a trilogy, to which Taylor replies: "I already beat her and I'm going to beat her again, there won't be a trilogy."

Who are Dimopoulos Lawyers?

Tyson is sporting a t-shirt emblazoned with the name of personal injury law firm Dimopoulos Lawyers who are no stranger to having their firm apparel worn by some of the biggest stars in sport. There aren't many law firms with their own clothes brand, but Dimopoulos is a different kind of law firm it seems.

They are also the firm bringing a class action law suit over the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix, when a practice session was cancelled after just nine minutes with angry fans upset at only being offered merchandise vouchers.

Paul on who's more powerful

"I know I'll be able to take Tyson's power. I'm going to show Mike who has the more power. I think he's underestimated me".

Paul on Tyson's longevity

Paul might end up getting battered by Tyson in a couple of months, but he's full of praise for him right now. "This is all second nature to him. I've been doing this for four years, he's been doing it for decades".

Tyson and Paul "to shut the sporting world down"

As we thought, Tyson and Paul continue to big the fight up to the hilt. "We're going to shut the sporting world down, no one else can do it".

Serrano discusses eye injury

Serrano discusses her recent eye injury and says she's "100% fine" and "reayd to go". She had an injury to her eyelid rather than her eyeball, which does sound much less painful, in all honesty.

Questions for Taylor and Serrano coming up.

as.com

What does Tyson actually think of Paul?

"I really like Jake". A phrase that got plenty of boos from those in attendance...

as.com

Paul: "He's been wanting to do this for years"

"Mike wanted this to be a pro fight, he wants a war. I respect that, I respect he wants to put an end to me, he wants to end the YouTuber."

as.com

"I'm beautiful. I'm doing great but my body's sh*t right now," Tyson adds.

Tyson on why he's facing Paul

"It was a no-brainer. He was the up-and-coming guy on the scene. I like shaking the sports world to its core."

Fans out in force for Paul - Tyson at the Apollo Theater

We're just under 20 minutes away (in theory) from things getting underway at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Our team on the ground have put this video together, with excitement building!

as.com

Obviously, I don't want to be accused of bias, so we can't look at Jake without comparing with "Iron Mike".

And whaddaya know, it turns out he's not done too badly for himself either.

Here are the numbers.

as.com

Just while we're on the topic of money...get ready for your eyes to water.

Jake Paul hasn't done too badly for himself in the content creation game (that's putting it mildly) and has carried that on in the boxing ring.

Here's how much he has mades since his first fight back in 2018, along with his overall personal wealth.

How much will Jake Paul and Mike Tyson make from the fight?

No official figures have been confirmed, with varying numbers bandied about. Paul has somewhat optimistically claimed the fight could generate $300 million, although that was played down by UFC legend Henry Cejudo, who reckons Tyson will pick up around $20 million from getting back in the right.

Still not bad work if you get can it, eh?

Second pre-fight press conference in Arlington, Texas: when is it?

Just in case you don’t get enough of Jake Paul and Mike Tyson today, you’ll get another chance in all of three days’ time. The newfound rivals will be putting on a repeat performance on Thursday (16 June), but this time in Arlington itself.

Netflix are really milking this cow.

How can I get tickets for Jake Paul - Mike Tyson?

Fancy seeing the action up close (maybe sit a row or two back from the front, just in case)?

Paul has confirmed on social media that tickets will be going on sale on Thursday 16 May. They will be official sold by promoter MVP, with anyone interested in going able to get involved in the pre-sale sign-up, which gives exclusive first access to tickets 48 hours before the public (on Tuesday 14 May).

You can do that right here.

You can, of course, also find tickets on the second market (StubHub, VividSeats), although you’ll no doubt have to stick your hand further into your pocket for those ones.

Why will Paul and Tyson wear heavier gloves than normal?

Standard pro gloves weigh 10 ounces, but Paul and Tyson will be wearing 14-ounce gloves instead when they try to batter lumps out of one another. Why?

Well, contrary to what your instinct might tell you, heavier gloves actually reduce the power of punches.

In approving terms for fights, the The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, who have sanctioned the fight, consider, among other factors, each contestant’s age, medical tests, win-loss record and losses by knockout or technical knockout.

as.com

How many rounds will the fight be?

Many pro fights nowadays go for 12 three-minute rounds, although that won’t be the case for this one. Paul and Tyson will go at it for eight two-minute rounds instead.

A case of age catching up on “The Baddest Man on the Planet” or Paul wanting a boxing legend to take it easy on him?

Whatever the reason, I won't be suggesting either of those two things to either of them.

"Iron Mike" ring rusty?

Tyson's last fight all told was an exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr in November 2020, which was a better spectacle than many had anticipated but left few desperate to see “Iron Mike” back in the ring on a regular basis.

His draw against Jones Jr in Los Angeles came more than 14 years after we last saw him in the ring in a non-scored bout against Corey Sanders. Those are the only two times he has stepped between the ropes since retiring...until now!

When was Tyson's last professional fight?

With the professional status of the bout in mind, that means Mike Tyson will get an exepected chance to improve - or worsen - his record after almost 20 years.

The Brooklyn native will be 58 by the time of the fight in July, which will be almost 19 years after he last competed in a professional match-up.

“The Baddest Man on the Planet” won 50 of his 58 fights between March 1985 and June 2005, although he three of his six pro defeats came in his last four bouts.

After being knocked out by British duo Lennox Lewis and then Danny Williams, he ended his career - until now - in underwhelming fashion, retiring before the start of the seventh round against Irish journeyman Kevin McBride. He later claimed he only took the fight for the money and wasn't in the right shape to win.

as.com

Is Paul - Tyson an exhibition or professional fight?

With the fight being streamed on Netflix, you might think the bout is for show only. That was the initial plan, which Tyson refereed to as recently as the start of April.

However, it was soon confirmed that this will, in fact, be the real deal, and has been sanctioned as a professional fight by the Texas Combative Sports Program.

AT&T Stadium: The “Death Star”

The venue for the fight, though, is the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The 320-foot-tall retractable-roof stadium, earned its “Death Star” nickname due to its sheer size, and is also affectionately (I think) refereed to as Jerry World after Dallas Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones, the man behind its construction.

In addition to NFL, AT&T Stadium has hosted college football, basketball, Wrestlemania, supercross and soccer, with matches at the upcoming 2024 Copa América and 2026 FIFA World Cup to be played there.

Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and The Rolling Stones are among the big names to have performed in concert in Arlington.

And this won’t be the first fight to take place at the “Death Star” (maybe an unfortunate name if you’re one of the contenders). Manny Pacpuiao and Canelo Álvarez are among those who have headlined championship bouts.

What is Jake Paul's professional boxing record?

Now, if so far I've made Jake Paul sound as if he's some kind of joke figure (because of the YouTuber background), then I probably shouldn't have done.

To call Paul simply a “social media star” is selling him a bit short, although he does still have lots to prove as a boxer. The 27-year-old, who made his name as an online content creator, has since carved out a successful boxing career that he is taking incredibly seriously. After starting out against fellow YouTubers and non-boxers, Paul has stated his desire to face real out-and-out boxers in an effort to prove he deserves to compete for a world title.

Paul has a 9-1 record from 10 fightswinning three by knockout, including against former NBA star Nate Robinson and MMA fighter Nate Diaz (by unilateral decision). His only loss so far came to British boxer Tommy Fury by split decision.

Mike Tyson would be quite the scalp, even if he will be 58 by the time the fight comes around.

When does the Paul - Tyson press conference begin?

Paul and Tyson - unlikely rivals, it has to be said - are expected to face the media at 5:30 p.m. ET / 2:30 p.m. PT.  With around 90 minutes to go, that should give us plenty of time to take a look where, when and how the actual fight will go down, as well as just why they are going in the ring together (in case that isn't obvious...). Ka-ching.

Mike Tyson: one of the greatest ever heavyweight boxers

Actually, is that last statement true? “Iron Mike” is 57 years old these days, which I’m going to say means he’s past his prime (don’t tell him I said that, though).

Still, he was the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles, as well as the only heavyweight to unify them in succession. And he became the youngest boxer ever to win a heavyweight title at 20 years old back in 1986.

Class is permanent, as they say.

Hello and welcome to AS USA’s live text coverage of the pre-fight press conference before social media sensation turned pro boxer Jake Paul takes on the legendary Mike Tyson later this summer.

The Apollo Theater in Harlem is the venue for today’s event. How good-natured is it likely to be? How much trash talking are we likely to hear? They key questions that we’ll have all the answers to in just a little while.

I’m Roddy and thanks for joining me!
