Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson among highest grossing fights in US history
Friday’s Netflix special in Arlington (Texas) has become one of the Top 10 of highest-grossing fights as Jake Paul defeated veteran Mike Tyson.
The hype was huge leading up to the fight on Friday with Netflix reporting that a record 60 million viewers tuned into the action from the AT&T Stadium in Texas as YouTuber turned boxer fought the legend but now veteran ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson.
According to initial figures, the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson has become one of the top ten grossing fights in US history with $18.1 million dollars but it lags well behind the most lucrative boxing bouts.
Big payday
The highest-grossing fight in combat sports history was Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao in 2015, which grossed a total of $72.2 million, or four times the amount generated by Friday’s fight.
Mayweather remains the king of boxing as four of the ten fights in the Top 10 feature ‘Money’, including the top two as the Michigan native faced the Filipino fighter and MMA’s Conor McGregor.
‘Internet breaker’
“The event broke the internet,” said fight organiser Nakisa Bidarian. “There’s never been a streaming event of this magnitude in history.
“Could we have made more money on pay-per-view? Of course,” he added. “But that wasn’t the goal here. This was about legacy, this was about brand-building, this was about an iconic moment where the world stopped and got reintroduced to boxing.
This event is a testament to the global impact of Jake Paul, Mike Tyson, Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano and the incredible athletes on this card,” MVP co-founder Bidarian said in a statement.
