Jake Paul vs Nate Díaz fight format: rounds, weigh-in, rules...
With fight night upon us, it’s time to take a look at the format, weight, and rules for what promises to be an exciting bout between Jake Paul and Nate Diaz.
From heated exchanges on Twitter to an interview walkout and most recently an all-out brawl between their security teams, the build-up to the fight between the YouTuber turned-boxer and the former UFC icon has given us everything we hoped for and then some. Now, the only thing left for them to do is step into the ring.
Jake Paul vs Nate Diaz: Boxing Promotion 101
Ask any purist and they will likely tell you that they can’t stand Jake Paul. From his outlandish comments and fashion sense to his apparent ‘disrespect’ for the way things should be, the former YouTube star seems to rub many of boxing’s fans and boxers themselves, the wrong way. Yet, what few will admit to is that Paul is putting boxing as a sport back into the mainstream, and he’s getting fellow fighters paid more while he does. Of course, you don’t have to take our word for it, you can take the words of a former heavyweight champion, and the man who many believe to be the greatest of all, Mike Tyson.
Featured in Netflix’s new documentary, “Untold: Jake Paul the Problem Child,” Tyson makes it clear that he sees things from a different perspective. “Listen, he did more for boxing than some of the champions did,” Tyson says. “I’m a fan of people that know how to put asses in seats. Those are the guys I look up to. ...So we gotta keep this guy bright ‘cause he’s gonna save boxing as long as he continues to fight. He got the light, you know what I mean? He’s touched. He got the light.” Now while you can debate whether Paul has the light, what he does have is pull power. On average, the purse for each of his fights has been between $2 million and $3 million, an amount that none of his opponents have competed for in their respective careers. Even Paul’s opponent on Saturday night, former UFC star Nate Diaz stands to earn more in this fight than he’s pocketed in any other. Surely that’s got to count for something, right? At any rate, what can be agreed upon is that whether you love him or hate him, Paul’s appeal as a fighter or rather someone you want to see get ‘knocked the f*** out’, as he puts it, can’t be denied.
So, what are the rules for Jake Paul vs Nate Diaz?
When Jake Paul and Nate Diaz step into the ring at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on Saturday night, they will be doing so in a 10-round boxing match at 185-lbs catchweight. This brings us to Saturday’s official weigh in which saw Paul come in at 185 pounds on the dot, while Diaz was just a whisper under at 184.9 pounds. Both men will be using 10-ounce gloves for this bout. Where records are concerned, Paul comes into Saturday’s fight with a 6-1 record in boxing having suffered the first loss of his boxing career back in February against Tommy Fury. Diaz on the other hand will be making his boxing debut following a 15-year stint in UFC during which he contested 34 MMA bouts. The point is, don’t miss this one.
