Why isn’t Jon Rahm playing in the US Open: What injury does he have?
Jon Rahm was forced to withdraw from the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst 2. This will be the first major championship he has missed since 2016.
There was doubt about Jon Rahm’s status coming into this weekend, and on Tuesday afternoon the Spaniard confirmed his absence from the upcoming US Open due to a foot infection.
‘Rahmbo’ let the golf world know via his X account, while he wished the rest of the players good luck in this weekend’s major, “After consulting with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long term health, to withdraw from this weeks US Open Championship. To say I’m disappointed is a massive understatement! I wish all my peers the best of luck and want to thank all of the USGA staff, volunteers and community of Pinehurst for hosting and putting on what I’m sure will be an amazing championship! Hopefully I’ll be back in action sooner than later!”
Earlier on Tuesday Rahm admitted to reporters “Oh, It’s a concern” With a sandal on his left foot in the press area. Alarms started ringing around Pinehurst 2 after he missed his second straight practice round. “It’s doing better. But definitely still in pain.” He was asked if he was going to play and told the media he “didn’t know.”
In the end the former Masters winner will miss the weekend because of an infection between his pinky toe and the toe next to it where he suffered a cut that made him withdraw the LIV Golf event in Houston on Saturday. The infection puts an end to a streak of 26 majors played dating back to 2016 when he missed the PGA Championship.
Insult to injury
Rahm says he doesn’t know where or when he sustained the injury, but he does know it hurts. “I don’t know how or what happened, but it got infected.” Rahm said in the preround interview. He got an injection before the round in Houston that was, “It was supposed to last the whole round, and by my second hole I was in pain already,” Rahm said. “The infection was the worrisome part. The infection is now controlled, but there’s still swelling and there’s still pain.”
After dropping out of Houston, he will miss golf’s third major of the season, but is looking on the bright side when it comes to is play. “It’s not like I’ve been playing bad, even though a lot of you make it sound like I’m playing bad,” Rahm said. “I had two bad weeks. “I’ve been top 10 and had a chance to win in most of the tournaments I’ve played,” he said. “And then unfortunately Augusta and PGA wasn’t my best showings. But yeah, I’m happy.”
