Just a few days after Chávez Jr. lost his boxing bout to Jake Paul by unanimous decision in Anaheim, California, he was arrested. The Department of Homeland Security announced that he was detained with plans to deport him to Mexico, where he has been linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, a criminal organization involved in drug trafficking and various other criminal activities. The arrest warrant was issued in 2023, and the investigation lasted four years.
After 46 days in detention in the United States, the boxer was deported to Mexico and immediately jailed on the charges against him. Mexico’s National Registry of Arrests reported that Chávez Jr. was detained Monday while being transferred from a border checkpoint and is currently in jail in Hermosillo, Sonora.

Yesterday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the deportation at her morning press conference. “I understand he was deported, I don’t know if it was yesterday or this morning, but we were informed that he was going to arrive in Mexico. Chávez Jr. was also facing legal proceedings in the United States, having been detained in early July for entering the country illegally.
