Millman blasts US covid restrictions on Djokovic

The Australian tennis player criticized the entry measures in the country. “The recommendations are not followed, I don’t understand why they don’t let him compete.”

Australian tennis player John Millman is the latest to speak out to show support for Novak Djokovic in the Serbian’s struggle with the United States authorities to be able to play this year’s US Open despite not being vaccinated against coronavirus.

Through a series of messages published on his social networks, Millman explained that he doesn’t understand how recommendations are given but then not followed by the general public, while Djokovic is denied entry to the country. “I am out with covid. I was in the US and I didn’t really feel that too many were following the recommendations ore guidelines there. Which is fine, but therefore I can’t understand why Novak Djokovic can’t come and compete.”

Millman went on to justify this statement, adding that he would understand restrictions on Djokovic entering the US if a rigorous policy was being carried out to control rising coronavirus cases. “Let me be clear. If everyone in the country was following guidelines then I’m all for them enforcing a vax entry policy. But from what I saw pretty much no one was, the tournament allows non vax citizens to play and only 30% have had a booster...

The Australian also regretted the criticism he has received on social media for only giving his opinion. “Twitter is full of people having all types of opinions on different matters but when an athlete has an opinion on something that is not to do with their sport they are told to “stick to your sport”
