Now that Cain Velasquez has been granted bail, what’s next for the former UFC champion?
Velasquez’s case raises serious moral questions. While it’s hard to dispute the idea, that any individual facing such terrible circumstances would likely do the same, things never end well when we allow our primal self to defeat higher reason.
The former UFC champion could soon be back home with his family, following a judge’s decision to grant him bail after his involvement in an attempted murder case.
Cain Velasquez granted $1 million bail
According to reports, former UFC champion Cain Velasquez has been granted bail by a Santa Clara County judge. The news comes, following Judge Arthur Bocanegra’s approval of the motion by Velasquez’s attorneys on Tuesday. It’s worth mentioning that Velasquez had two previous requests denied by the court. There are of course, conditions for Velasquez’s release which include $1 million bail, home detention with GPS monitoring, outpatient treatment for traumatic brain injuries, counseling and a court issued protective order to stay at least 300 yards away from alleged victims Harry Goularte, Patricia Goularte, and Paul Bender.
“Mr. Velasquez, I would not release you if I was not convinced that finally a release at this time, eight months later, that you would be a danger to Harry Goularte, primarily, Patricia Goularte or Paul Bender or the public,” Judge Bocanegra said. “But if you are as devoted as a husband and father, I have to believe and I’m confident he will not jeopardize anything that would take away from your son, your daughter or your family. I hope you don’t prove me wrong.”
What did Cain Velasquez do?
On February 28th of this year, Velasquez rammed a vehicle and then proceed to fire shots into it. The vehicle in question was carrying Harry Goularte Jr. Goularte, who himself was actually out on bail amid accusations that he had molested a close relative of Velasquez. Goularte’s stepfather was also in the vehicle and was allegedly hit by one of the bullets fired by Velasquez, however his injuries were deemed non-life-threatening. Velasquez was then formally charged on March 2nd with one count of attempted first-degree murder. The former UFC fighter was also charged with nine other offenses related to assault and use of a weapon. For the moment, no official trial date has been set.
