The World Athletics Championships will be staged in the United States for the first time history from July 15 to 24, and the U.S. hopes to continue its medal-winning ways at home with its formidable team led by world champions and record-holders.

American athletes topped the medal table in the 2019 Doha Championships with a haul of 14 golds, 11 silvers, and four bronze medals, for a total of 29. This year’s 151-strong team is determined to match or surpass this number. Here are some athletes who are favored to become champions for the country.

Allyson Felix: Living legend’s 10th World Championship

Allyson Felix is among those expected to add to the country’s medal count, as the decorated athlete makes her 10th World Championships appearance. She will be competing in the mixed 4x400m pool, and hopes to add to her 18 world medals which include 13 golds.

Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin and reigning world champion Dalilah Muhammad will compete to solidify the dominance of American women in the 400m hurdles.

Team USA is also expected to excel at the women’s 800m, with Athing Mu, Ajee Wilson, and Raevyn Rogers possibly achieving a medal sweep of the event.

Prospects look good for the men’s shot put, with Olympic champion Ryan Crouser and two-time world champion (and defending champion) Joe Kovacs both having a shot at the gold.

The men’s 200m squad also looks set to monopolize the podium, as defending champion Noah Lyles, Erriyon Knighton, Fred Kerley, and Kenny Bednarek attempt to achieve a Team USA medal sweep.

Team USA’s supersprinters

The men’s team of sprinters likewise has a good chance of dominating the 100m event, with Olympic silver medalist Fred Kerley leading the pack. Teammate Trayvon Bromell is the second fastest this season, Christian Coleman is the reigning world champion out to defend his title, and Marvin Bracy finished second after Kerley at the national championships.

Female sprinters that can bag medals for the US are current national champion Melissa Jefferson, former national champion Aleia Hobbs, and Twanisha Terry. These three athletes have what it takes for a podium finish at the women’s 100m.

Other athletes that will be looking to defend their titles at Eugene’s Hayward Field are Nia Ali who will go up against fellow Americans Kendra Harrison and Alaysha Johnson, (women’s 100m hurdles), Donavan Brazier (men’s 800m), Grant Holloway (men’s 110m hurdles), DeAnna Price (women’s hammer) and Christian Taylor (men’s triple jump).
