Monahan of course has been heavily scrutinized in recent days for his role in the highly controversial proposed merger with LIV Golf.

PGA’s Jay Monahan suffers ‘medical situation’

According to an announcement from the PGA Tour on Tuesday night, commissioner Jay Monahan is now recovering from a “medical situation.” There have been no further details given, aside from confirmation that PGA Tour executives Ron Price and Tyler Dennis will assume his responsibilities for the time being. The news follows what has been an extremely contentious week for the Tour after reports indicated that the organization intends to merge with LIV Golf. Indeed, the deal is said to be backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund which will reportedly invest heavily in the as-yet-unnamed for-profit company.

For his part Monahan in the scenario Monahan has faced a barrage of criticism, however, the 53-year-old has defended the decision stating that it will allow the game to be taken to higher levels. It’s worth mentioning that an initial meeting with players to discuss the situation did not go well. Then, there is also the fact that just earlier this week a Senate investigation was opened into the proposed deal.

What did the PGA say about Jay Monahan?

In its statement about the situation, the PGA Tour gave no firm details as to exactly what happened to Monahan but did say, that updates would be given as appropriate:

“Jay Monahan informed the PGA Tour Policy Board that he is recuperating from a medical situation. The Board fully supports Jay and appreciates everyone respecting his privacy. During Jay’s absence, Ron Price, Chief Operating Officer, and Tyler Dennis, Executive Vice President & President, PGA Tour, will lead the day-to-day operations of the PGA Tour with the assistance of the great team Jay has built, ensuring seamless continuity. We will provide further updates as appropriate.”

Jay Monahan has been commissioner of the PGA tour since 2017.
