The United States set a new points record in today’s meeting with Korea Republic at the 2022 FIBA Women’s Baketball World Cup. Cheryl Reeve’s team made history after beating Korea 145-69 at Sydney’s Superdome, making a strong case as to why they are the big favourites to win the tournament.

The US team surpassed the previous record of 143 points in one game set by Brazil in their meeting with Malaysia at the world championships group stage in Malaysia in July 1990. The points margin was also the biggest in US history, just eclipsing the 75-point difference in the 119-44 win over Angola in the 2014 edition. On Monday, the US scored 90 points in the paint, completely overwhelming the Asians and added more than 30 points in each quarter. Other historic milestones set included 62 field goals and 36 assists.

Brionna Jones ended with the best figures of the match with 24 points, 8 rebounds and a PIR of 35. But she was keen for her personal tally not to detract from the team achievement. “This is a great honor. With all the teams that have played in the Women’s World Cup, being able to break this record is incredible,” she said afterwards.
