There are just over two weeks to go before the first round of the French Open gets underway and tournament organizers pulled a surprise on Friday by announcing a considerable increase in the amount allocated to prize money for this 2023 edition.

Roland-Garros will allocate an impressive 49.6 million euros to prizes this year, which represents an increase of 12.3% compared to the 2022 edition.

The hike represents a rise of 9.1% in the individual categories. That will particularly affect the players who bow out in the first round, who stand to earn between 11 and 13% than in last year’s event. The increase will be 4% for the doubles tournaments.

Whoever ends up as champion in both the men’s and women’s individual categories at the French Open will receive a large sum of 2.3 million euros for winning the title.
