Report: Floyd Mayweather one of the top celebrity polluters
‘Yard’, a digital marketing agency, has prepared a study that includes celebrities who pollute the planet the most through the use of their private planes.
In this age of climate-related crises, it is no secret that traveling by plane is a big contributor to leaving a colossal carbon footprint. CO2 emissions are significantly higher by plane than any other means of transport, although the fact that many people share a regular flight somewhat mitigates that impact.
The bigger problem is when private jets are used to make journeys that in many cases are difficult to justify: their impact on the environment is disproportionate to their use. However, it is a very popular form of travel among billionaires and celebrities, whether they are sports stars or famous faces from the entertainment world.
Digital marketing agency Yard has prepared a report that includes those celebrities who have accumulated the most carbon emissions in their private plane trips since the beginning of 2022. The agency is aware that the ranking prepared is not conclusive with respect to the biggest offenders because the data presented exclusively includes the flights registered in the Twitter account of CelebrityJets. However, it is a good sample to get an idea of the dimension of the matter as well as its consequences.
It is also not possible to determine if the celebrities that make up the list traveled on all the registered flights because sometimes they rent their jets to other users. In any case, with them on board or without, those journeys have taken place, and Taylor Swift tops the list of celebrities whose private planes pollute the most.
Celebrities with top-polluting private planes
Floyd Mayweather flying high
Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather follows Taylor Swift closely, since through his private jet travel- or his plane- he has emitted 7,076.8 tons of CO2 in a year That’s 1,011 times more than a person’s annual average, which is just 7 tons of CO2 per year. Leaving such a large carbon footprint is usually not a fact to be proud of.
The difference between Mayweather and the rest of the celebrities is that his jet has accumulated more flights than any other celebrity on this list, making 177 so far this year, an average of 25 flights per month, that is say, almost one flight a day (!). The shortest recorded by Mayweather was a 10-minute trip, landing in Las Vegas and emitting one ton of CO2. Shame is the furthest thing from his mind when it comes to flying private. In fact, his social media posts indicate that he shows it off every chance he gets.
