Rickie Fowler wins a title 1,610 days later
Ricky Fowler finished off his Sunday with a birdie in on the tiebreaking hole to close out his first win on the PGA Tour in more than four years.
The American Rickie Fowler finally put an end to a long streak of almost four and a half years without a title this Sunday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, Michigan. It didn’t come easy for Fowler, who went to a tiebreaker with Collin Morikawa and Canadian Adam Hadwin after each of them finished the 72 holes tied at -24.
Rickie Fowler started the week at number 35 in the world, but will climb to 23rd on Monday. It was his tenth title as a professional and his sixth on the PGA Tour, but the Southern California native had not won since he won the Phoenix Open on February 3, 2019, four years and five months or 1,610 days ago.
The current Jupiter, Florida resident started the final day as the leader, but Hadwin and Morikawa hunted him down with final rounds of 67 (-5) and 64 (-8). Morikawa, the winner of two majors, he tied the course record with his 64 on Sunday. Fowler closed Sunday with a lap of 68 (-4). In the tiebreaker, Fowler overcame a poor tee shot on the par-4 18th hole, while his two opponents left the ball in the fairway.
Fowler’s second shot from the rough was the best of the three, leaving the ball about six feet from the hole. Morikawa went wide of the green and Hadwin put his shot on the green but the backspin left him a lot of work to do on his third shot. Collin missed, and Adam failed to birdie his remaining long putt, either. Fowler putted in for birdie to secure his 10th win of his professional golfing career.
