RIP The Hitman
Hatton rose to global fame in the 2000s, winning world titles at light-welterweight and welterweight. Known as “The Hitman,” he built a loyal following that turned fight nights into football-style spectacles, none more so than his clashes with Kostya Tszyu, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
Beyond the ring, Hatton was admired for his humor, accessibility and enduring bond with fans in his hometown. His struggles with mental health were well documented, and in later years he worked to raise awareness of the issue in sport.
No cause of death has been given. Greater Manchester Police have said that officers were called by a member of the public to attend the house in Tameside, where they found the body of a 46-year-old man.
“There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances,” they said.
Tributes from across boxing and beyond began immediately on the back of the sad news, and are expected to continue in the coming days, as the sport mourns one of its most beloved figures.
