Sam Burns wins the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge

It took Sam Burns one extra hole to beat his good friend Scottie Scheffler in a playoff. Burns was hot all day and his 5-under round on Sunday put him in first place in the clubhouse while Scheffler was trying his best to tie Burns’ 9 under overall score. Scheffler struggled on Sunday with two over par and couldn’t make a birdie down the stretch to avoid the playoff.

A win on Sunday would have been Scheffler’s fifth of the season and coming into the last round he was the favorite to win, despite the missed cut at the PGA Championship. For Burns, it was his third win of the season, which currently places him in tenth position in the Official World Golf Ranking.

His 38-foot putt on number 18, the first hole of the playoff, gave him the title along with $1,512,000, a plaid jacket and a custom-built Schwab Firebird Trans Am. He came out of nowhere on Sunday with a 5-under round of 65 while the rest of the pack struggled to make par. He was seven strokes behind the leader at the start of play on Sunday and blew past big names like Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and, of course, Augusta Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who most sports writers had already penciled in as the winner.

This victory at Colonial is a confidence booster for Burns going into the US Open in three weeks, while others like Jordan Spieth are still trying to figure things out.

Mito Pereira, the Chilean golfer who double-bogeyed 18 at the PGA Championship had a strong tournament and finished T-7.
