Scottie Scheffler ran away from the pack late in the final round from Augusta to secure his second Green Jacket and etch his name in Masters history. The New Jersey native shot a final round 68 for his second major championship in his budding career.

Scheffler runs away on back nine

Coming into the third round Max Homa, Colin Morikawa and Ludvig Aberg were all in contention, chasing the former Texas Longhorn who led by a stroke after 54 holes. Scheffler was -7 coming into Sunday and was paired with Colin Morikawa who entered Saturday -6 while Homa was -5 and Aberg was -4.

All four came out looking locked in through the first nine, and there was a four way tie at the top of the leader board through seven holes. Morikawa faded shortly after that with doubles bogeys on holes 9 and 11, but Aberg and Homa stuck around waiting for Scheffler to waver.

Major champion and dad to be

Scheffler never did. On a weekend in which his wife could have given birth at any moment, and he would have had to leave the tournament, he went birdie-birdie-birdie on 8, 9 and 10 to pull away and build up a cushion over the chasing pack. Aberg doubled the 11th hole to drop five strokes back and never recovered despite a couple late birdies on 13 and 14.

Homa held on until the Par 3, 12th hole where he overshot the green and doubled having having to hit it out of the pines. That opened the door for Scheffler to distance himself from the rest of the players in the final grouping and have a comfortable final few holes.

He went through a nine hole stretch in which he birdied six of nine holes and cruised to a four stroke win and take the Green Jacket he handed off to John Rahm back from the Spaniard just a year later. The two time major champion will await the birth of his first child in his second Green Jacket in hand.
