With a list of high-profile investors that keeps growing, it would appear that the new venture started by two of golf’s most iconic players, is the hottest ticket in town at the moment.

Serena Williams & Steph Curry latest join TMRW Sports

From the looks of it, TMRW Sports, a company founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, has become a complete hit amongst a wide selection of top tier athletes. From soccer star Gareth Bale, to the Celtics Jayson Tatum, Formula 1′s Lewis Hamilton and let’s not forget the Angels’ Japanese sensation, Shohei Ohtani. The point is the list consists of a who’s who of the sporting world, as well as a few ‘normal celebrities to boot like Justin Timberlake for good measure. With that said, you can now add tennis legend Serena Williams and NBA superstar Steph Curry to the mix. According to reports, the pair are the latest celebrity athletes to join up. As for what TMRW Sports actually does, the company describes itself as one that is “harnessing technology to build progressive approaches in sports, media and entertainment.”

The Lowdown on TMRW Sports & the TGL

Regarding what the company is tangibly responsible for, Woods and McIlroy have kicked things off with the upcoming TGL, a screen golf league that will launch in 2024 and feature PGA Tour players. Whether or not the project is going to be a success is perhaps up for debate, but what is certain is that with the kind of financial power that its investors carry, it won’t be for lack of resources. “Over the past year we’ve assembled a team of investors who will help deliver on the TMRW Sports’ mission to positively impact how sports are experienced in the future,” said CEO (and co-founder) Mike McCarley in a statement.

“From the very beginning our plan has been to partner with the best-in-class in every way imaginable and Tiger, Rory, and I value the support of this unrivaled team of investors, advisors, and ambassadors who believe in our vision to harness technology to create progressive approaches to sports. Their combined broad reach and cultural relevance will expand potential opportunities and fanbases for TMRW projects. Plus, many share a passion for golf that only adds more fuel to TGL, our first project in partnership with the PGA Tour.”

Where does TMRW Sports go from here?

Given the broad nature of the language surrounding Woods and McIlroy’s project, it should be quite fascinating to see whether the company chooses to focus on the TGL, or branch out into other projects. Of course, it’s quite likely that the former will be option will be the case for some time. Consider for a moment, that the TGL of which the PGA Tour is partner, is a direct challenge to LIV Golf. Indeed, whether by intention or reaction, the PGA has made a monumental shift in its structure.

Until now, players were seldom allowed to participate in unsanctioned golf events without the Tour’s say so. The TGL aims to change that by offering players the opportunity to earn money outside the PGA’s traditional framework. That’s to say, the Tour has effectively answered to the major criticism that those who defected to LIV Golf had. Perhaps, the real question isn’t whether or not the venture will be successful, but rather how much change will it bring about along the way?
