Stenson sacked as European Ryder Cup captain after joining LIV Golf
The European Ryder Cup team has announced the Swede’s dismissal as captain after it was confirmed that he is joining the new Saudi-backed golf circuit.
The European Ryder Cup team has announced the dismissal of captain Henrik Stenson “with immediate effect” after he joined the list of players who have signed up for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour.
Ryder Cup goes to Italy in 2023
Stenson was due to lead Europe at the 44th Ryder Cup, which will be held from 25 September to 1 October 2023 at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome.
In a statement, Ryder Cup Europe said: “In light of decisions made by Henrik in relation to his personal circumstances, it has become clear that he will not be able to fulfil certain contractual obligations to Ryder Cup Europe that he had committed to prior to his announcement as Captain on Tuesday March 15, 2022, and it is therefore not possible for him to continue in the role of Captain.”
Stenson replacement to be confirmed “in due course”
The team added that it will announce Stenson’s replacement “in due course.” Stenson’s dismissal is another painful loss for Europe ahead of the next edition of the competition, after Sergio García announced during the British Open that he would never compete in the Ryder Cup again after joining the Saudi circuit.
