Stevenson calls out Haney after defeating Yoshino

Shakur Stevenson, arguably the hottest prospect in world boxing, wants to face the undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney, although he will first face Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Update:
Shakur Stevenson, arguably the hottest prospect in world boxing, wants to face the undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney, although he will first face Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Shakur Stevenson finally made his 135-pound debut and he closed the show in style. The American, regarded by many as the most talented young boxer in the world and seen as boxing’s future, had little trouble defeating Japanese fighter Shuichiro Yoshino.

The Newark native was a massive favorite going into the contest and easily dispatched his Asian opponent by recording a sixth-round TKO.

Stevenson, 25, who already showed his dominance in the feather and super-featherweight divisions, is now looking to reign supreme in the lightweight category.

Stevenson vs Haney: a fight between stars

Stevenson, who looked strong and dynamic at lightweight, didn’t bite his tongue and decided to call out fellow young star Devin Haney for the belts.

“Tell him to come on. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” Shakur said after the fight with Yoshino.

“Me and Devin [have] been in the ring with each other for years. I always got the best of Devin. I think it’s gonna be easy work. I think I’m gonna smoke him. I think I’m gonna shock everybody by smoking him and making it a really easy fight, he added.

Despite Stevenson’s desire of fighting Haney, The Dream has already a fight on the agenda, and it’s not an easy one. The American will be facing Vasiliy Lomachenko in May. The Ukrainian held multiple world championships in three weight classes from featherweight to lightweight.

If Haney manages to defeat the two-time Olympic gold medal winner, it would make sense to try to make the Stevenson-Haney fight happen, as they are both young and undefeated so far and both are Top Rank boxers.

Gervonta Davis is the other fighter that could be in the mix if both Haney and Stevenson get to share the ring.

Tank, a former world champion in three weight classes, has repeatedly stated he wants to face both fighters before hanging up the gloves. However, as Haney, he has a big challenge ahead of him first, as he is scheduled to face rising star Ryan Garcia on April 22.
