Teófimo López turns down offer to fight Devin Haney
According to Haney, the Honduran boxer was supposed to be his rival in Saudi Arabia next October.
Teófimo López turned down the opportunity to make a leap into boxing. According to American boxer, Devin Haney, who lost a controversial fight against Ryan García, in which the Mexican-American was disqualified for doping, the Honduran rejected a fight against him next month.
Haney explained that Turki Al Sheikh, an Arab sheikh who has gained great prominence by bringing boxing to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, offered the fight to the Honduran, however, he noted that Teófimo did not accept - arguing that he was not ready to return to the ring.
“I was supposed to return to the ring in October, in Saudi Arabia, and my opponent was going to be Teo. However, Turki called him and he said he wasn’t ready to fight,” Haney said in an interview with All the Smoke Fight.
Will there be a rematch with Ryan Garcia?
Despite having been knocked out by Ryan García in April, the fight was declared void after the Mexican-American tested positive for the banned substance ostarine, a situation that led to him being suspended for one year.
Haney would be willing to grant García a rematch to try to beat him while clean of drugs, although he ruled that if it happens, it must be on his terms.
“If I was here, I would fight right now. I tried to do it fairly and it was wrong. I did everything right; all my [tests] came back clean. Everything has to be right; everything has to be on my terms,” Haney added.
