The Open: Tiger Woods completes full practice round at St Andrews

Justin Thomas suggested Tiger Woods could again be a contender at The Open after seeing his friend complete a full practice round on Sunday.

Tiger Woods played a full 18 holes on Sunday at St Andrews as he prepared for the 150th Open next week.

Woods has not played since withdrawing after the third round of the PGA Championship in May. That was his second appearance since suffering multiple leg injuries in a car accident in February 2021. His first tournament back was The Masters in April.

Woods chose not to play in the US Open last month because he had his sights set on St Andrews, where he won two of his three Open championships in 2000 and 2005.

“I had some issues with my leg, and it would have put this tournament in jeopardy, and so there’s no reason to do that,” Woods said.

“This is a pretty historic Open that we are going to be playing,” he said. “I’m lucky enough to be part of the past champions that have won there and want to play there again, and I don’t know when they are ever going to go back while I’m still able to play at a high level.

“I want to be able to give it at least one more run at a high level.”

Justin Thomas played the practice round with Woods on Sunday after missing the cut at the Scottish Open.

Asked if he had been picking Tiger’s brain, Thomas said: “A little bit. I understand he is going to be a little withholding of some information, but I’m trying to needle him and get as much out of him as I can.

“He’s done pretty well around this place. I’ve never had probably a more productive missed cut than the Scottish Open because it’s been nice to come out here and prep the last two days.”

Thomas said he would not be shocked next week if Woods was in contention for his 16th major championship, which would move him within two titles of tying the all-time record set by Jack Nicklaus.

“I’ve learned not to challenge anything Tiger can or can’t do,” Thomas said.
