The 2024 Showdown, in which Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will take on Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka today, Tuesday, December 17, has been billed as an on-course battle between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf after years of off-the-course bickering. This will be the 11th edition of The Match, a series of exhibition match-play challenges which started in 2018, when Tiger Woods played against Phil Mickelson.

PGA Tour takes on LIV Golf

Although it appears as if McIlroy no longer “hates” LIV as much as he used to, that hasn’t stopped the 2024 event being described as a “grudge match” between the two tours. However, the Northern Irishman and Koepka live close to one another in Florida and are said to have developed a good friendship, while Scheffler, DeChambeau and Koepka are Ryder Cup teammates.

The foursome worked on a film project together a few weeks ago and recently took part in a portrait session for Golf Digest, in which fashion photographer Michelle Watt sensed an “overall brotherly candor among them” and a “sense of togetherness”.

So we shouldn’t expect them to be using their three-woods as weapons or even shouting during their opponents’ back swings during The Showdown. But pros being pros, their competitive streak means they’ll be desperate to win.

2024 Showdown: dates, venue, format, prize money

The event, which will have a Ryder Cup feel to it, will take place today, Tuesday, December 17, at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, the scene of that Woods vs Mickelson clash six years ago.

McIlroy and Scheffler will face DeChambeau and Koepka over 18 holes, which will be split into three six-hole sections.

The format for holes 1 to 6 will be four-ball/better ball, followed by foursomes/alternate shot on holes 7 through 12. The final six holes, 13 to 18, will be each man for himself in singles, mirroring the Ryder Cup.

There will be a minimum prize pool of $10 million which will be handed out to the winners in cryptocurrency, a first in the world of golf.

How to watch “The Showdown”

The event will be broadcast on television on TNT, TBS and truTV and can also be streamed on Max.
