Tiger Woods steals the show for all the wrong reasons: “Embarrassing”

Update:

Tiger Woods’ long-awaited return to competitive action on the PGA Tour was put back after he was forced to pull out of last week’s Genesis Invitational following the sad passing of his mother, Tida.

When will Tiger Woods play again on the PGA Tour?

The 15-time major champion was at Torrey Pines in California, but not in a playing capacity. Woods was interviewed by CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz, in which he reflected on the effect his mother had had on him both on and off the course, but gave no real indication as to when he will tee it up again on tour.

We have, however, seen the 49-year-old with a club in his hand since the final round at the Genesis. On Tuesday (February 18), Woods was part of the Jupiter Golf Links team, along with Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner, that took on the previously winless New York Golf Club (Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young) in TGL.

Unfortunately for Tiger and Co, they suffered a second heavy defeat in their three games so far. Their narrow 4-3 win over Boston Common Golf (Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley) was sandwiched between a 12-1 thrashing by Los Angeles Golf Club (Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose and Sahith Theegala) and now a 10-3 loss to New York.

Tiger Woods' comical TGL mix-up: “the most embarrassing moment”

And Woods didn’t help his flailing team with a comical mix-up on the 13th hole, by which point they were already 9-3 behind.

The Californian looked on with bewilderment as his approach shot into the green, 194 yards away, according to the simulator, came up a good 100 yards short, much to the amusement of everyone else, especially his own teammates.

You said 99 yards! I heard 99 yards” roared a confused Tiger, having seemingly not understood the word ‘one’ was implied before ‘ninety-nine’ when he’d asked Kim and Kisner how far it was to the pin.

Woods has had plenty of shots to remember over the years, although almost all of the others are for very different reasons. After the contest was over, he jokingly revealed it was “one of the most embarrassing moments of my career”.

Many, however, are enjoying seeing this ‘new,’ relaxed, self-deprecating side of the golfing icon, far removed from the incredible, but guarded, competitor we witnessed for so long.
