Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the PGA Championship after posting his worst-ever round in this tournament, finishing with a 9-over 79 in the third. The score makes this his third-worst round while playing in the majors, and ranks number five in his all-time worst tallies as a professional golfer.

He announced that he would withdraw from the competition soon after the last group finished the round at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He had said he was sore, after playing in cold weather conditions.

This is the first time that Woods has withdrawn from a major championship as a professional. The only other time he backed out was in 1995 as an amateur, when he hurt his wrist in round two.

Woods looked to be in discomfort the whole week, the chilly weather taking its toll on his body. The 15-time major champion began the day strong and had a decent 1 over in the first five holes. However, he tallied a six in the par-three sixth and looked like he was on his way to ending up with the worst score in his storied career.

However, he continued to fight until the end of the round, playing the last four holes in 1 under. Woods narrowly escaped once again recording one for the infamous “80 club”, which has only happened two times before for the golf legend in the majors.

Woods was tied for 76th place, out of 76 who made the cut.

The 2022 PGA Championship is his second tournament since he went through a horrific car crash early last year that almost caused him to lose his leg. He joined the Masters in April, where he similarly performed decently on the first two days of the tournament, before his body gave out when the weekend rounds were held.
