Update:

What began almost out of obligation—after all, who wouldn’t dream of a glittering golfing future for the son of one of the sport’s all-time greats—is slowly becoming reality. All signs suggest that Charlie Woods, Tiger’s heir (so far only in the biological sense), is on track to become a professional golfer. And increasingly, the evidence points to him being a very good one. As good as to match 82 PGA Tour wins and 15 majors? That’s impossible to predict, but the foundations are certainly there.

For now, he’s carving out a place for himself as one of the most promising young golfers in the United States—status he cemented further this Wednesday by winning the TaylorMade Invitational, his first tournament sanctioned by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). Charlie, who turned 16 in February, made his debut with a commanding victory.

Tiger Woods’ son cruises to victory

The event was held in Bowling Green, Florida, not far from the Woods’ residence in Jupiter, a favoured base for many PGA players. It brought together the crème de la crème of the country’s teenage golf scene, including Miles Russell—widely regarded as the standout prospect of his generation. A youngster who has already played PGA Tour events as a guest and is signed with Nike and TaylorMade.

Charlie, too, has experience competing alongside the pros, albeit on a smaller stage: the PNC Championship. An unofficial family team event in which he has, of course, played several times with his father—finishing runner-up in both 2021 and 2023. Even in a setting that should, in theory, exceed his level, he has looked composed and confident (even mimicking some of his father’s signature gestures or throwing in the odd cheeky remark picked up on mic). Among his peers, however, he dominates with astonishing ease. In Bowling Green, where he shot -9 over the first two rounds, he sealed victory with a final-round -6, including eight birdies, for a total of -15.

Nothing is set in stone, and in a sport that guarantees nothing—not even for the most gifted—it remains to be seen what direction his journey will take. But one thing is clear: Charlie Woods has all the tools to build a serious golfing career.
